How to Maintain Healthy Teeth and Gums for your Children

Brushing and Flossing

It is very important for children to brush their teeth at least twice every day and for at least two minutes. Only a soft bristle toothbrush should be used. It is also always a good idea to inspect a toddler's teeth after they brush.

Flossing can be introduced to children early on as long as it is being supervised by an adult. Kids' flossers come in a variety of colors that make flossing a fun activity for them.

Watch for a Sweet Tooth

Children eat and snack a lot of sugary food items (foods rich in starch or carbohydrates). Always watch for the sugar content in their diet.

High Sugar + Bacteria = Acid

Acid attacks teeth by eroding them. This makes it easier for the bacteria to penetrate teeth, leading to cavities and ultimately, an infection.

Maintain your Regular Dental Appointments

Keeping up with regular dental appointments for your children is the best thing one can do to maintain optimal health. The frequency of the dental appointments should be decided at the discretion of our Main Street dentist and the dental hygienist, as all children have different needs.
